Tea for Cold or Flu Recipe
By livelonger
True story!
A Brazilian friend of mine made me this tea about ten years ago when I was just coming down with a really bad flu. I drank it, and then throughout the night, I woke up about 5 times, each time completely soaked with sweat. I kept changing my shirt, but by morning, I was almost completely well. 100% TRUE! I have never had a recovery like that before - I typically descend into the flu for 1-2 days and spend at least a week recovering (coughing, sore throat, runny nose, etc)
This recipe sounds nasty, but again, it worked beautifully for me. If it helps, pinch your nose before you begin to imbibe:
A few notes
- echineacea - has not been proven to be effective, and in fact, recent studies have suggested it increases h. pylori levels in your stomach
- ginseng - I've heard good things about using this earthy-tasting root in tea, but not sure if it helps when you're feeling sick.
- See Stacie Naczelnik's recipe too
- 2 cups water
- head of garlic
- 1 inch fresh ginger root
- 1/2 tsp cayenne
- 2 sprigs baby dill
- 1 bag black tea
- juice of 1 lemon
- honey
Boil the water, and lower to a simmer.
Peel and crush the garlic & gingerroot, and add to water. Add cayenne, baby dill, tea and lemon juice, and turn off flame.
Allow to steep for 5 minutes, and then take out all the stuff floating in the tea.
When it has cooled sufficiently, sweeten with honey (do not add honey to boiling-hot tea).
Drink both cups and have a stack of t-shirts waiting by your bedside when you head to bed!

Cayenne has so many wonderful health benefits. I used it in a poultice once when I had a really bad infection--the infection was gone within 24 hours.
Good lord! Sounds powerful!!! :)
Thats a great one, instead of suffering from cold the whole week, this remedy is much better and quicker, healthier. I will try it when I have cold next time. I also use cayenne powder a little every day along with my meals. It has plenty of use like Stacy said.
I'm going for it...I made a tea with lemon, giner and honey..now I need to try the cayenne and garlic.
Olive leaf tea seems to do wonders for my colds. Maybe I will mix it with cayenne pepper. YUM!
This tea actually sounds kinda scary, but if you say it works, I'll just have to give it a try.
The reason this works is cause it's packed with anitoxidents, vit c but I use maple syrup not the other fake "Aunt Jemima" krap.....
This was amazing! Thanks so much, I woke up with a cold, made the tea- didn't have the pepper or dill so used chilli powder instead :) it doesn't taste as bad as I thought! Now I feel fantastic!
I am drinking this right now - it it supposed to be chilli if i have replaced the dill and the pepper for 1/2 tsp of chilli powder??
This is a great recipe for a sweating tea! I've bookmarked it AND linked it in my hub. Thanks for sharing this!
This stuff really works I had actually done this tea before but with garlic cinnamon honey chamomile and star of anis. My 2 yr old always gets sick and this cures him right away!
Hey would you guys be able to tell me if "something" burns afterwards?
Yes, this really works. This is also a common Ethiopian practise we use to treat colds and the flu. thanks for this.
Wow this sounds like it would be worth a try.
I'm prone to flu during rainy season or cold weather. And when the symptoms started, its gets severe which ranges a week or more though I already take medicines regularly. Maybe this could be a good remedy, I give it a try next time.
Well, Im sick and gave this a try, aside from being spicy, I loved the taste of it, Cleared my sinus' and I think im gonna have more before bed, but Dang was it spicy
I am definitely trying that!!
Is a garlic head the entire bulb or just one clove?
Jay: As frightening as it may sound, the entire bulb. (I'm not talking about elephant garlic here; a small-medium bulb should be fine)!
