WordPress Visual (WYSIWYG) Editor Missing: How to Fix
Have you ever started a post on WordPress and have your Visual Editor vanish on you? It's happened to me several times, and it's frustrating. When I try to write a new post, the entire formatting bar on the Visual Editor vanishes, the text turns white (effectively invisible, unless you highlight it), and you have to shuttle to the HTML Editor to see anything. If you switch back to the Visual Editor, it retains all the HTML tags and the formatting bar is still gone.
Very frustrating.
Most guides I've found online tell you to reinstall WordPress (tried that), to deactivate all of your plugins (tried that), and to run all sorts of tests on your WP installation (tried those, too). None of them worked for me.
The only thing that worked was something relatively simple:
- FTP to your web server (your HTML docroot)
- Download the file wp-config.php
- Add the following line of code at the
bottom of the file, right before the require_once line.
define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false ); - Upload the amended file to replace the original
Puzzlingly, this is not something that's been fixed over many, many new versions of WordPress (it's still a problem with 3.1 for me), so if this problem plagues your otherwise-lovely WordPress experience, be sure to keep these instructions handy.
